Shelter:
Notes from a detained migrant children's facility
Available in Spanish as:
Refugio: Notas de un centro de niños migrantes detenidos
Shelter is the first written account of life and politics within immigration shelters for unaccompanied minors. The author, a therapist within a major immigration shelter, offers a vivid description of daily life, the complicated and often heroic efforts of shelter workers, and the real processes that decide who joins family and who is deported.
These evocative stories follow young people from the day they are picked up by U.S. Border Patrol to the day they exit the shelter, with unforgettable accounts of chaotic journeys, the situations that drove them to enter the U.S. illegally, and what each child faced in a quest for release to their U.S. relatives.
